Welcome to CHIANTI-VIP.
CHIANTI-VIP (CHIANTI Virtual IDL and Python), developed and mantained by myself, Giulio Del Zanna, is a member of the CHIANTI family, where we provide atomic data and codes to the astrophysics community.
CHIANTI is an Atomic Database and programs for Spectroscopic Diagnostics of Astrophysical Plasmas. See. https://www.chiantidatabase.org
CHIANTI-VIP is an open platform to develop additional features and provide them to the community. They include additional atomic data, additional information, IDL programs, a set of interactive python programs with graphic user interfaces (GUI), and virtual CHIANTI interfaces.
The importance of our work has been recognised in 2024 by a NASA group achievement award to the CHIANTI team “for outstanding contributions to the scientific productivity of NASA missions and the creation of a uniquely valuable tool for spectroscopic scientists worldwide.”
Most of my work over the decades has been carried out for free, but significant funding has been provided by STFC (UK) via research grants to the Atomic Astrophysics group now led by myself (see https://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/research/astro/) and via the UK-VAMDC proposal, a follow-up of the FP7 EU-funded grant VAMDC, 2008–2012, see https://vamdc.org
Most of the atomic data we provide within CHIANTI were calculated within the Atomic Processes for Astrophysical Plasma (APAP) Network, led by Prof. N.R. Badnell, funded by STFC (UK) over a long period of time, see http://apap-network.org/
